James Backhouse and George Washington Walker, "sent to the Australian colonies by the London Society of Friends, the pair travelled to all major centres and many isolated settlements between 1832 and 1838, everywhere pursuing their objectives of investigating and reporting to authorities on the penal system and on the treatment of aborigines, promoting the cause of temperance and preaching to the scattered settlers both bond and free.".
