À propos de ce livre
J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings establish a foundational mythos for modern fantasy literature. Written by a British philologist and Oxford professor, the works are set in Middle-earth, a meticulously crafted secondary world featuring distinct languages, ancient histories, and intricate maps. The Hobbit follows a reluctant hobbit’s unexpected journey to reclaim a dwarven kingdom, while The Lord of the Rings expands this setting into an epic struggle against a dark lord seeking to dominate all free peoples. Together, the volumes explore enduring themes of power and corruption, loyalty amid despair, and the quiet courage of ordinary individuals facing overwhelming forces. Tolkien’s academic background in linguistics and medieval literature deeply informs the narrative structure, giving each culture its own dialects, genealogies, and mythic traditions. The series is recognized for establishing the conventions of high fantasy, including detailed worldbuilding, moral complexity, and a focus on mythic storytelling. These interconnected volumes remain central texts for studying the development of speculative fiction and the construction of secondary worlds.

Ce Qu'en Disent les Lecteurs
“Not just fantasy - it's a meditation on industrialization, war, friendship, and the corrupting nature of power.”
“The songs and poems slow things down but add to the mythic quality. This is meant to be an epic saga, not a thriller.”
“Tolkien was a linguist who invented worlds to house his languages. The result is the richest fiction ever created.”

Tolkien was a linguist who invented worlds to house his languages. The result is the richest fiction ever created.
Incredible world-building but the pacing can be glacial. Tom Bombadil chapters nearly lost me.
The Hobbit is a perfect adventure story. LOTR is a perfect epic. Together they're unbeatable.
Read it at 12, re-read at 30. At 12 I loved the adventure. At 30 I understood the themes of loss and sacrifice.
My desert island book. The scope, the depth, the beauty of the prose - nothing else comes close.
